The Corona Diaries

SKETCHES FROM 400 DAYS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

by DEBRA NAYLOR

Graphic designer and artist Debra Naylor shares the lighthearted sketch diary she kept during the Covid-19 lock-down. The Corona Diaries features 148 pen-and-ink and watercolor panels capturing the changes, challenges, constraints and, at times, comical nature of daily life as it unfolded during the pandemic. Naylor’s figures and commentary evoke their creator: warm, witty, original, and always heartfelt. They help us remember—with appreciative chuckles—an era that is almost in the rear-view mirror.

Day by day . . .

Readers of The Corona Diaries will meet wry chronicler Debra, husband and retired computer engineer Pete, a cast of wild birds in the “Backyard Entertainment Center,” neighbors, and the secret thoughts of Bennie the ginger cat. It’s all here, from the mask-making marathons, unpredictable online shopping, six-foot intervals, sourdough starters, Zoom doctor visits, and the Bernie Sanders mitten craze to the Virginia hotel that arranged its curtains to spell “Kind.” Not to mention the staggering casualty rates, the George Floyd atrocity, the painting of “Black Lives Matter” on 16th Street and the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol—just blocks from her home. Debra’s measuring glass (half full? half empty?) drops into scenes to indicate the mood that day.
